Le Mosaiste was formed mainly to spark the inspiration and to awaken the imagination of cultivated people across the Western World for the natural beauty and reverence of these fascinating works of art. The company was founded in 2005 by two recent college graduates and friends, who share a certain appreciation for art and culture, to facilitate the import and distribution of authentic handcrafted Moorish mosaic tile. Le Mosaiste collaborates with a select group of Moroccan artisans called “Cooperative Des Maalems De Zellige”. This institution was formed by more than 120 of the most famous Moorish craftsmen in 1959, a time when this traditional craft seemed to be doomed to extinction. Getting together was the ultimate way to safe this art and to safeguard its continuity. The “Cooperative” is an institution deep-rooted in the past based on strong foundations and it draws its experience from previous craftsmen whose knowledge has been passed on throughout generations for hundreds of years.
